COVID-19 Announcment

By James Myburgh on Mar 23, 2020

Dear DBYC Members,

As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads, Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club (DBYC) is taking additional safety measures to protect our members and volunteers. The scale of impact is still unknown, and we want to do our part to protect our community.

Effectively immediately DBYC will cease operations and bring the 2019-20 Sailing Season to a finish. This means that all organised sailing activities (Twilight Sailing on Fridays, Puffin Pacers on Saturday and Youth/Adult sailing on Sundays), the clubhouse, and all social events are suspended and/or closed. For all non-DBYC activities that take place at our facilities, please follow the direction of the organisers of such activities.

We have had a fantastic 2019-20 Sailing Season so far, with lots of memories, new friendships and amazing stories to share. The DBYC Management Committee is committed to ensure that we celebrate and recognise our members accomplishments and we look forward to holding our Awards Ceremony later in the year once we have weathered this storm.

We acknowledge that for many of us ‘sailing is in our blood’ and in times of need like this one it can be a vital ‘food for the soul’. For this reason, we will keep our boathouse accessible to all our members who would like to practice ‘social distancing’ through sailing.

We would fully expect DBYC members who wish to sail as a small, distanced group to contact each other on whatever platform they choose and get on the water.

However no DBYC equipment, including support boats and the Hoffmobile, will be available. DBYC cannot sanction, or be seen to be sanctioning, any gathering, for now and until such time as the “all clear” has been signalled.

We also encourage our members and friends everywhere to take the extra precautions necessary to safeguard their health and that of others. It’s everyone’s responsibility to help stop the spread of this virus. The Australian Government Department of Health website and your local health authorities are the best resources for updates and answers to questions. They have just released a new set of videos which we encourage all our members to view:

The Club is cognisant of its responsibility to the broader community during this unprecedented situation and actively canvassing ideas from the membership on how this might happen, what we might be able to do.

If your club can offer any of our members, especially our seniors (with respect) help in any shape or form to get through this worrying time, feel comfortable to contact us here at DBYC .

Also, I encourage you all to exercise caution with regards to this worldwide health issue and please look out for each other, keep calm and focus on  a clear direction with your decisions and day to day stuff. The quicker we move with this and stop the virus spread, the sooner this will all seem of smaller consequence, hopefully .

Over the years, as our community has been faced with challenges, we have always been inspired by how we emerge stronger and with an even deeper sense of purpose. We will persevere through this challenge, too.

Thanks and best wishes

Commodore Peter Hales, on behalf of the DBYC Management Committee
